Sri Lanka's spice industry is deeply rooted in its tropical climate, which provides an ideal environment for growing high-capsaicin peppers. However, the local market for sweet chili flakes has evolved from backyard processing to centralized industrial manufacturing to meet the rising demands of the tourism and export sectors.
Economic shifts have led to a surge in demand for standardized condiments. Manufacturers are now pivoting away from inconsistent manual grinding toward precision-engineered crushed chilli powder to ensure uniform heat levels across large-scale production batches for the domestic retail market.
Despite the availability of raw materials, there is a critical gap in the production of specialized extracts like chili seed oil, which is increasingly sought after by the gourmet food sector in Colombo to achieve a deeper, more aromatic flavor profile without the grit of traditional powders.
